Phase 1: Illustrated Talks & Readings

The purpose of these talks and readings is to help others develop a greater understanding of the art of noh, and for a wide range of people to understand and engage in discussion about how a new English language noh begins its journey ‘from page to stage’. 

Illustrated talks and readings took place throughout 2018 and are continuing into 2019 in a range of locations.

Completed 2018 talks and initial readings, included an event at the Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead in support of the UK National Dying Matters Week (23 May 2018). Other public talks and readings have taken place in London (British Library, SOAS and Royal Holloway University of London, Manchester, Durham, Northumbria and Oxford in the UK; and in Kilkenny and Dublin in Ireland.

Completed events

Combined additional Phase 1 and also Phase 2 Events were extended into 2019 as part of the Japan-UK Season of Culture in London (Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the British Library and the Embassy of Japan), Essex (East 15 Acting School), Dublin (Mill Theatre) and in Paris (ARTA).

Our collaboration with a range of educational partners is central aspect of the project where collaborators have welcomed introductory talks and engagement with projects which have either been directly or indirectly associated with noh. These include: 

  • a major schools project in collaboration with the Japan Society, London and the City of Coventry with 180 Coventry Young Ambassadors are working on three projects associated with the Between the Stones Theme and cultural interests 

  • student workshops and projects with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (student performance workshop), East 15 Acting School (2nd year, BA World Theatre student writing and performance project), and

  • we have already completed illustrated talks and readings at Royal Holloway, University of London, and SOAS, for the SOAS Japan Research Centre
